Insulation is often the unsung hero of energy efficiency. By reducing heat loss through your walls, roof and floors, insulation cuts energy consumption, improves comfort and can boost your property’s EPC rating by several bands. Here’s why upgrading your insulation should be top of your list.
Cavity wall insulation fills the gap between inner and outer walls to prevent warm air escaping. Solid wall insulation, either internal or external, creates a protective layer around older properties with no cavities. Both types drastically reduce heat loss and are funded under ECO4 and GBIS schemes for qualifying homes.
As much as 25 % of heat is lost through an uninsulated roof. Adding 270 mm of mineral wool or rigid foam to your loft keeps warmth inside during winter and helps your home stay cool in summer. Proper loft insulation is quick to install and pays for itself many times over in fuel savings.
For properties with suspended timber floors, underfloor insulation stops draughts and keeps your home cosy. It also reduces damp and improves the performance of heating systems like heat pumps.
An EPC assesses how energy‑efficient your home is. Upgrading insulation can raise your rating from a D to a C or even higher, opening the door to more funding opportunities and making your home more attractive to buyers. Better insulation means smaller carbon emissions and lower running costs.
If you’re on benefits or a low income, ECO4 can fully fund insulation upgrades. If you’re not on benefits but live in a property with EPC D or below and Council Tax band A–D, the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) may cover the cost.
